july coffee drop: maracaturra

Specialty Coffee producer from Colombia, standing with coffee cherries sourced from direct-trade relationships.

We are so excited to tell you all about our first coffee drop from Otto Coffee Club!

For the July coffee, we’ve chosen to explore the hills of Huila, Colombia with a Washed Maracaturra from our producer partner Luis Calderón.

Luis Calderón is a 3rd generation coffee producer from Huila, Colombia. We first began importing Luis’ coffee in 2022 with our importing company, Cotrade Coffee, in collaboration with our sourcing partner Juan, from KWC. Luis has a reputation in the specialty coffee industry of both mastery and ingenuity, and is renowned for his creative and unusual processing and cross-breeding methods. He is endlessly experimenting and innovating, pushing the coffee world forward and inspiring producers, roasters, and coffee-drinkers alike. This is most definitely the case in our first Otto Coffee Club drop, with the uncommon varietal Washed Maracaturra. His Maracaturra coffee has a magnificent milk chocolate and tropical fruit profile, a neat finish, and produces a juicy cup of coffee.

The Maracaturra is the result of cross-breeding the Maragogype and Caturra varietals. It’s typically grown in Brazil, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. It produces an enormous bean, as result of the Maragogype cross-breeding - which is also known as the “Elephant Bean”. It’s sweetness and balance comes from it’s Caturra parent. The combination of the two make a high-yielding and wind-resistant crop. The varietal does have some hardiness, but can be susceptible to leaf rust, so it must be carefully cared for by its producers.

Calderón’s Maracaturra is grown at an elevation of 1,750 feet above sea level.

Maracaturra’s unique flavors and universal appeal is why we chose this coffee for the very first Otto Coffee Club drop. We are honored to share this coffee with you and tell you more about its origin and the producer partners. Order today and try taste this delicious coffee for yourself. You can never go wrong with a clean and consistent Washed Colombian coffee!
