For our August Coffee drop, we are touring a unique Sumatran coffee: the Gayo Burni Telong. This remarkable coffee provides an earthy yet impeccably clean profile, accented by delightfully sweet and fruity notes. Our August release proudly shines a spotlight on the exceptional craftsmanship and expertise of our partner Mahdi Usati, a coffee expert and producer based out of Aceh, Indonesia.

Indonesia stands as a global beacon for some of the most extraordinary coffees, ranking as the fourth-largest coffee producing country in the world. At the forefront of this is producer and coffee expert Mahdi Usati. He is distinguished and renowned within the Indonesian coffee world and beyond.

Mahdi is chairman of the Gayo Cuppers Team, a group of coffee experts dedicated to the education of Indonesian coffee farmers, and equally dedicated to improving Indonesian coffee quality. This esteemed group undertakes the role of verifying coffee quality for producers and setting industry benchmarks, rendering valuable feedback to farmers on how to best improve their crop.

Coffee holds an intrinsic significance to the Indonesian tapestry. The history of coffee in Indonesia traces back to the late 1600s, when the crop was brought over by Dutch colonialists. Mahdi is part of a group who seize upon this historical narrative, reclaiming the legacy, production, and quality of coffee, shaped by Indonesian hands. Through the establishment of this community of coffee industry professionals, Mahdi orchestrates a future where coffee production becomes a vessel for the prosperity of the Indonesian communities, ensuring livelihoods for those who work in coffee.

WET-HULL PROCESSING

Wet-hull is a traditional Indonesian coffee processing method and unique to Indonesia.

Mahdi Usati stands as a prominent figure within the Indonesian coffee landscape.

In the Gayo Burni Telong, Mahdi upholds the essence of the Sumatran coffee profile, yet brings forth an earthy sweetness, balanced by a profound richness. His relentless pursuit of excellence resonates through his endeavors, as he not only refines his own craft but also imparts his wisdom to others. Through his role as a dedicated educator, Mahdi illuminates the path toward impeccable coffee quality standards, empowering fellow producers to create excellent coffees for consumers everywhere.

The wet-hull process imparts a notable and velvety body to the coffee, while also allowing lower acidity compared to alternative processing techniques. Our cupping experience revealed notes such as apple, cherry, cedar, and clove. This coffee has a unique intensity due to the processing method, counterbalanced by its inherent richness and earthy undertones. We have the utmost respect and appreciation for Mahdi, not only for sharing this remarkable coffee with us, but for his unwavering commitment to elevating coffee quality in Indonesia, redefining the very concept of "excellence."

We invite you to dive deeper into the minds and hands responsible for your morning drink, discovering the intricate details that go into each cup.
